``More and more, writers are turning to the Internet to do research for their scripts,'' said Karen Pedersen, Director of Research for the Writers Guild of America. ``Writers who need information about drug abuse should visit DrugStory.org. It provides the facts about drug abuse from the experts themselves -- people on the medical, scientific, public policy and law enforcement front lines.'' DrugStory.org provides the writing community with a resource for drug- related information not currently available in one place on the Web. The site is hosted by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) as part of its National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign. ``Writers and journalists play a central role in shaping how our society sees itself,'' said John P. Walters, Director. ``It is vital that writers have access to accurate, reliable information about drugs and about the real-life ramifications of drug use. The Internet is an ideal medium for providing this kind of information, and DrugStory.org can be a useful resource.'' DrugStory.org's features include: Direct contact with experts: The site provides a gateway for writers to email questions directly to respected experts in a variety of drug-related fields including doctors, treatment experts, law enforcement officials and federal agents. First-hand accounts of substance abuse: DrugStory.org provides compelling first-person accounts from drug users, their friends and relatives, and the professionals who treat them. It also includes interviews with law enforcement officials, addiction experts, and specialists in a variety of fields including international drug trafficking, sports and doping, and money laundering. ``Writers are storytellers -- so I believe hearing first-hand from people who have had direct experience with substance abuse will be invaluable,'' says Pedersen. ``In addition to the facts, DrugStory.org offers first-person accounts from young drug abusers who are now on the road to recovery. Some of those young people did not survive, and their stories are told by the families they left behind.'' Information about drugs and drug use; links to a wide range of substance abuse resources: DrugStory.org provides links to hundreds of online resources, including federal agency Web sites such as the FBI, CIA and DEA; nonprofit Web sites such as Partnership for a Drug Free America; and academic research institutions, including several major universities. In addition to its principle features, DrugStory.org includes detailed sections focusing on drug statistics, treatment, prevention, drugs and crime and drug trafficking, as well as an international perspective on drug-related research, statistics and current events. The content will be regularly updated with topics and expert contacts to ensure the site continues to provide accurate and up to date information. In 1998, with the bipartisan support
of Congress and the President, ONDCP created the National Youth Anti-Drug
Media Campaign, an effort designed to educate and empower all youth to
reject illicit drugs. The Campaign relies on ads developed by the Partnership
for a Drug-Free America, and its brand and its messages are widely recognized
by America's youth and their parents. Counting on an unprecedented blend
of public and private partnerships, non- profit community service organizations,
volunteerism, and youth-to-youth communications, the Campaign is designed
to reach Americans of diverse backgrounds wherever they live, learn, work,
play and practice their faith.
