Many literacy tools and resources are available on the BETWEEN THE LIONS Web site, including a new curriculum section which illustrates how BETWEEN THE LIONS addresses the five key elements of reading instruction, as outlined by the National Reading Panel, 2000 (phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension). View the curriculum overview and related links at http://pbskids.org/lions/about/curriculum.html. The particular literacy needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing are also addressed in a section of the site called Cornerstones http://pbskids.org/lions/cornerstones/. There you will find three downloadable teaching units which include: video versions of BETWEEN THE LIONS stories in two modes of English (Signing Exact English and Cued Speech) and in American Sign Language (ASL), lesson guides, story text, story in hypertext, games and other supplementary materials to keep children engaged. The learning objectives of each unit focus on story comprehension via learning a large number of vocabulary words from each story and dimensions of each word beyond the meaning in the story. In addition, you will find 15 new stories at http://pbskids.org/lions/stories/, new songs including Homophones, sung by R&B superstar Brian McKnight and Cleo at http://pbskids.org/lions/songs/, and many more new games at http://pbskids.org/lions/games/. Additional regular features on the BETWEEN THE LIONS Web site include interactive stories; original games and gizmos; parents survival guide to literacy; printable games and coloring pages; songs and video clips from the show; recommended books; and a sign-up area for The Paw Print, a weekly e-mail newsletter featuring literacy tips and what's new on the site. More information on the BETWEEN THE
LIONS series is available in a press kit at http://pbs.org/pressroom/
