| American
Experience Online (pbs.org/amex),
the companion site to PBS' acclaimed documentary series, has unveiled six
new Web sites. Ranging in subject from a controversial dictator to a Hollywood
pioneer, these new sites provide a wealth of resources: rare film footage,
interviews with filmmakers and historians, online discussion areas, interactive
games, and in-depth teacher's guides, which provide suggestions for active
learning. These sites can be used to complement the documentaries or on
their own, to explore the exciting stories that create the vibrant mosaic
of American history. |

| American
Experience Online premiered in November of 1995 and has since won accolades
from viewers and critics alike. To date, American Experience Online has
produced over 85 feature sites. These sites complement the viewing experience
by encouraging in-depth exploration of the issues surrounding each documentary
subject beyond the television screen. |

The new Web sites are:
Fidel Castro
www.pbs.org/amex/castro
Fidel Castro has confounded
American presidents from Eisenhower to Bush. Through this fully bilingual
Spanish-English Web site, meet the man, watch rare newsreels, hear from
the filmmaker, and share your views on Castro's regime and the future of
Cuba. At "Destination Cuba," visit the intriguing island just 90 miles
south of Florida. This interactive map provides vivid photos, and tells
the rich story of Castro's revolution.
(AMERICAN EXPERIENCE's Fidel
Castro will air on Monday, January 31 on PBS)
Building the Alaska Highway
www.pbs.org/amex/alaska
In 1942, nearly 11,000 soldiers
battled ice, snow, mountains, mud, and mosquitoes to blaze a 1,500-mile
road through the unforgiving subarctic landscape, in one of the boldest
homeland security initiatives ever undertaken. Join the producers in "Scouting
the Route" that the soldiers took to build the highway. And learn "How
to Build a Road" in an interactive feature that demonstrates how the army
engineers triumphed over frozen earth, swampland, and drastically changing
temperatures.
(AMERICAN EXPERIENCE's Building
the Alaska Highway will air on Monday, February 7 on PBS)
Mary Pickford
www.pbs.org/amex/pickford
Mary Pickford was America's
Sweetheart and a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood in the Golden Age
of silent film. Learn more about women on screen, visit the silent film
vault to view excerpts from three classic Pickford vehicles, and browse
the online gallery. To find out if you have what it takes to become a box-office
superstar, play "Shoot for Stardom," and chart your career path through
the fast-changing motion picture industry.
(AMERICAN EXPERIENCE's Mary
Pickford will air on Monday, April 4 on PBS)
The Great Transatlantic Cable
www.pbs.org/amex/cable
Imagine a world in which news
of a war's end didn’t reach the front lines until weeks after the treaty
was signed. In 1866, that world disappeared, when the tireless work of
an energetic young New Yorker came to fruition in the laying of the transatlantic
cable, which stretches over 2,000, three miles below the ocean's surface.
At this engaging Web site, learn about the life of Cyrus Field, tell us
if you would have invested in the cable, and yuk it up mid-19th century
style with cable jokes. And at "Science Expo 1870," see the scientific
concepts behind the transatlantic cable and hear from the people who advanced
the fields of electricity and oceanography in later years.
(AMERICAN EXPERIENCE's The
Great Transatlantic Cable will air on Monday, April 11 on PBS)
