Gettingfoodstamps.org
Helps Residents Determine Food Stamp Eligibility
Project Bread, Massachusetts
leading anti-hunger organization, announced today the launch of gettingfoodstamps.org,
the most comprehensive Web site in the nation devoted to empowering low-income
families and individuals in need of food. Project Bread developed the Web
site by securing a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture
Food and Nutrition Service.

Through this statewide Web-based initiative, Project Bread hopes to increase
Massachusetts resident participation in the federal Food Stamp Program
by eliminating some of the barriers to access. The Web site provides an
outlet for applicants to learn about the Food Stamp Program. Additionally,
gettingfoodstamps.org provides
a confidential calculator that allows the viewer to determine eligibility
and estimate benefits. The Web site also offers information and support
on what documents are required to complete the application process successfully.
Low-income working families represent the largest growing population
in need of food assistance. Up until now, the primary way for a low-income
person to determine eligibility was to make a trip to the Department of
Transitional Assistance (DTA) during traditional office hours -- often
forcing those least able to afford it to miss work or other daytime commitments.
Gettingfoodstamps.org offers
a flexible and quick way to find out if an applicant is eligible for food
stamps and, because it is a Web site, allows access that is private and
conveniently available at any time of day.
Gettingfoodstamps.org
provides visitors with a background on the federally-funded Food Stamp
Program, eligibility guideline information, a list of documents to bring
to the DTA, access to a printable application form, and tips for filling
out the form. A main feature of the site is the confidential food stamp
calculator. Using Massachusetts standards, food stamp eligibility is determined
after visitors complete a series of questions based on household size,
living expenses, and income. This is part of Project Bread's ongoing effort
to empower low-income families and individuals by moving information about
food resources into the community where potential recipients live and work.
