"Since the site's launch in 1995, we have continued to add content and features to enhance the user experience and reach a wider audience," said James A. Horbowicz, Chairman of the Board, American Diabetes Association. "The primary purpose of the redesign was to make finding valuable diabetes information faster and easier for everyone. This is not the end of a process, but rather evidence of a continuing effort to improve our outreach to all individuals affected by diabetes." The Association's Web site, diabetes.org, is the largest and most popular diabetes site on the Internet, attracting nearly half a million visitors every month. Because of the site's growth in content, resources, and most importantly, audience, some key changes have been made to the new site. First, the revised information architecture means information will be grouped in a more logical way, using terms, labels and icons that are easier for people to understand. Next, rollover menus will help speed access to specific content while adding context to an overall category by allowing users to view subcategories within a particular section. To address the distinctive demands of each and every viewer, the new site features "mini-sites," where you can find information and distinctive navigation to fit the needs of health professionals and scientists, parents, our Spanish-speaking visitors, and those newly diagnosed with diabetes. Based on feedback from site users, Diabetes Research, as well as Advocacy and Legal Resources are now primary navigation points on the homepage. It is now easier and faster than ever to learn what cutting-edge research the Association is supporting, and, if you are a scientist, learn more about investigator-initiated grant opportunities and targeted diabetes research programs. In the Advocacy and Legal Resources section, expanded content includes information regarding health insurance, discrimination and how states are responding to the diabetes epidemic. Finally, another exciting feature of the new and improved diabetes.org is the incorporation of a new section of the site, the ADA and Rite Aid "Ask the Pharmacist" area. This feature allows visitors to submit questions about diabetes management and receive guidance from a Rite Aid pharmacist. The American Diabetes Association is the nation's premier voluntary health organization supporting diabetes research, information and advocacy. The Association's mission is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Founded in 1940, the Association provides services to hundreds of communities across the country. For more information please call the American Diabetes Association at 1-800-DIABETES (1-800-342-2383) or visit http://www.diabetes.org. Information from both these sources is available in English and Spanish.
