Heart By-Pass Surgery Live On Web Tuesday
Methodist Healthcare of San Antonio, Kaleidoscope
Television, and CardioThoracic Systems, Inc. will offer
Web users chance to ask questions while watching
surgery live.
Next
Tuesday, cardiothoracic surgeon Lawrence Hamner will make his Web debut.
No, he's not launching his own Web site. He's doing something far
more serious, and making a bit of Web history in the process. Hamner
will perform a beating-heart bypass surgery at Methodist Hospital in San
Antonio. The surgery will be carried live on the World Wide Web, and can
be viewed at (http://www.broadcast.com/video/windowsmedia/kaleidoscope/surgery/),
or accessed via the Methodist Healthcare System Web site at http://www.SAHealth.com
or Kaleidoscope Interactive (http://www.ktv-i.com).
Over 598,000 bypass surgeries are conducted each year in the United
States. Bypass surgery reroutes blood around clogged arteries to improve
the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart. Conventional bypass surgeries
are performed after the heart is stopped and the patient is put on cardiopulmonary
bypass, or a heart-lung machine.
CardioThoracic Systems, Inc. has developed a device that allows cardiothoracic
surgeons to perform a bypass procedure while the patient's heart continues
beating. The device stabilizes the portion of the heart that is being bypassed.
The surgery is referred to as off-pump. There are a number of potential
benefits to off-pump bypass surgery including reduced trauma, reduced risk
of bleeding, reduced risk of stroke, reduced risk of renal failure and
reduced post-operative complications.
Kaleidoscope
Television is a national cable television network focused on health, medicine,
nutrition, lifestyles and personal achievement, headquartered in San Antonio.
At 6:30 p.m. (CST), www.ktv-i.com will host a pre-chat session so viewers
will be able to ask questions and actually participate in the event. A
hosted chat will follow the procedure at 9:00 p.m. (CST).
