In 1950, Percy Julian was one of the few African Americans with a Ph.D. He was Chicago's man of the year and a groundbreaking scientist. But it wasn't an easy road. Denied teaching positions and the target of death threats, Julian struggled to get ahead in a racially hostile world. New media-rich resources, adapted from NOVA: “Forgotten Genius”, explore how Julian revolutionized chemistry with the first synthesis of a chemical compound, as well as the challenges he overcame as an African American despite legalized segregation.

This Teachers’ Domain special collection includes high-school level science resources on Percy Julian’s scientific achievements in chemistry, showing the step-by-step processes Julian used to synthesize an alkaloid and a steroid, which serves as a key resource in understanding the process of scientific experimentation. Middle school and high school civil rights resources address the African American struggle in the 20th century to overcome education inequality (used in collaboration with additional resources in the civil rights collection adapted from the Eyes on the Prize series).

These chemistry and civil rights resources can be found on the Teachers’ Domain at http://www.teachersdomain.org/exhibits/pj07-ex/index.html. For more information regarding “Forgotten Genius”, please visit the NOVA web page at http://www.pbs.org/nova/julian.
