Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Voyage of Endurance on the Web
When he left South Georgia Island on December 5, 1914 in his bid to be the first to cross the Antarctic continent, Ernest Shackleton had no idea that the next bit of land he touched  (save for remote Elephant Island) would be that very same South Georgia - a year and a half later and after having not so much as set foot on the Antarctic continent. The story of what happened in between constitutes one of the most stupendous polar survival sagas of all time.

In 1914 Shackleton and twenty-seven men set forth on a south polar expedition, only to become trapped in pack ice and stranded for nearly two years in one of the most inhospitable regions of Earth.

Meet the Team

"MEN WANTED: FOR HAZARDOUS JOURNEY. SMALL WAGES, BITTER COLD, LONG MONTHS OF COMPLETE DARKNESS, CONSTANT DANGER, SAFE RETURN DOUBTFUL. HONOUR AND RECOGNITION IN CASE OF SUCCESS. SIR ERNEST SHACKLETON"
Who would answer such an ad, which Shackleton placed in a London newspaper seeking recruits for his 1914 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition? Meet the 27 men who did, and find out what credentials you would have had to bring to the table to gain the respect of Sir Ernest Shackleton -- and a berth on the Endurance.

Time line 1914-1916
When he left South Georgia Island on December 5, 1914 in his bid to be the first to cross the Antarctic continent, Ernest Shackleton had no idea that the next bit of land he touched  (save for remote Elephant Island) would be that very same South Georgia - a year and a half later and after having not so much as set foot on the Antarctic continent. The story of what happened in between constitutes one of the most stupendous polar survival sagas of all time.

Escape from Antarctica
This activity puts you aboard the James Caird lifeboat in the place of expedition captain, James Worsley. Your task will be to take three readings with your sextant over a 15-day period. Take accurate readings and your position will be accurately plotted on the chart and you'll make it to South Georgia. Take imprecise readings and the wind, waves, and current will push you beyond the island into the South Atlantic, where you will inevitably perish.

Tending Sir Ernest's Legacy: An Interview with Alexandra Shackleton
Meet Sir Ernest’s only granddaughter, the Honorable Alexandra Shackleton, life-president of the James Caird Society, which was founded to honor Shackleton and provide information about his expeditions. Ms. Shackleton’s reflects on what motivated her legendary grandfather and how he felt about self-recrimination and soul-searching.

Lesson Plans for Teachers
Teachers will find multiple resources and lesson plans, organized by category and age group, to use in their classroom. For example, students in grades 5-8 and 9-12 can click on parts of a photo to learn about the dangers of Antarctic exposure and wildlife; necessities of food, water, shelter, and fuel; and psychological effects of surviving in the world's coldest environment.

Join the NOVA Online Mailing List
Teachers, viewers, and surfers can join the NOVA Online mailing list for a free e-mail notice when the site is updated with new interactive features, interviews, and lesson plans.
