For one in five
students, learning is an exhausting and frustrating struggle. "Misunderstood
Minds," a 90-minute documentary, examines various learning problems by
following five families who try, together with experts, to solve the mysteries
of their children's learning difficulties. Produced and directed by renowned
"Frontline" filmmaker Michael Kirk, and narrated by Chris Bury,
ABC "Nightline" correspondent and guest anchor, "Misunderstood Minds" airs
Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at 9pm on PBS (check local listings).
The "Misunderstood Minds" Web site (http://www.pbs.org/misunderstoodminds/) includes strategies for addressing various learning difficulties, tools for educators and parents, background on current issues surrounding the topic, resources to learn more, and information on the five children profiled in the documentary and their families. An interactive feature called "Firsthand" provides a glimpse of what it may be like to have learning problems, such as difficulties decoding the components of words, problems with memory, or with the recall of basic math facts.
