American Medical Association Launches New Consumer Web Site

The American Medical Association (AMA) has launched a new consumer web site, providing the public with daily health and medical news, First Aid information and much more. The user-friendly site -- dubbed 'AMA Health Insight' -- features information on adolescent and women's health and a "point and click" tour of the human body. It can be found at  http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/physician-resources/patient-education-materials.shtml

Themes and information on AMA Health Insight change on a regular basis. The new service currently details AMA Guidelines for Adolescent Preventive Services (GAPS), designed to help physicians provide comprehensive clinical preventive services to adolescent patients. The emphasis is on keeping adolescents healthy and well. Other features include heart healthy recipes and an interactive patient history form to prepare patients for a doctor visit. Bonnie Chi-Lum, M.D., M.P.H., is Editor-in-Chief of AMA Health Insight, and is working with a distinguished advisory panel that can bring reliable health and medical information to the Web with a friendly, helpful-to-the-consumer approach.

Also available on the AMA's web site is "AMA Physician Select, On-Line Doctor Finder." The searchable Physician Select gets its information from the AMA's database of over 650,000 licensed physicians. Hundreds of thousands of healthcare consumers have already used AMA Physician Select to find a doctor by name, specialty and location. The AMA Web Site is among the innovative applications nominated for a Computerworld Smithsonian Award in 1997. PC Magazine named the AMA Web Site as one of the top 100 web sites on the entire World Wide Web. Consumer Reports, American Health and MSNBC have all recently featured AMA Physician Select, On-Line Doctor Finder. Two million pages are viewed each month at the AMA Web Site.
