Today’s great thinkers are continuing in Albert Einstein’s intellectual footsteps, pondering such monumental topics as string theory, the ideals of pure math and the lifecycle of stars.  The Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, is a breeding ground for modern visionaries.  A new Web site, BIG IDEAS Online, offers a look into the minds of these dynamic scholars and explores some of the most groundbreaking concepts ever.

Visitors to BIG IDEAS Online will find the site, like the series, covers not only science, physics and mathematics, but also a wealth of humanities subjects, from the rise of Islam to the history of terrorism to topics in music, language and art. Via text, video downloads, streaming video, graphics, and still photography, surfers can meet today’s big thinkers and learn more about their fields of study in an interactive forum.

With a click of the mouse, learn from such intellectual gurus as mathematical physicist Edward Witten, who has been called the “smartest man on earth,” as he discusses string theory.  Sit in with astrophysicist Sara Seagar as she raises the possibility of extraterrestrial life and explains how to hunt for new planets.  Enjoy the out-of-this-world ideas of mathematical physicist and astrophysicist Freeman Dyson, from breeding diamond-toothed, garbage-eating turtles to bioengineering the next generation of humans to live in space.  Hear from political philosopher Michael Walzer as he weighs in on terrorism and the concept of  “just” and “unjust” wars.  Listen as world-class pianist Robert Taub analyzes Beethoven’s sonatas to find new meaning in the masterpieces.

“It’s intelligentsia’s greatest hits!,” quips Anthony Chapman, director of Thirteen Online.  “BIG IDEAS Online is a terrific resource that expands and even goes beyond the many topics covered in the television series, bringing the knowledge of the finest experts in their fields to the fingertips of Web surfers.”

“We hope that the series inspires viewers to want to learn more about the various topics it covers and use this rich Web site to its full potential,” said series executive producer Beth Hoppe.  “The series is smart television…its Web site is equally smart and full of big ideas of its own.”

BIG IDEAS Online is a production of Thirteen Online of Thirteen/WNET New York.  It is produced by Brian BruniusAnthony Chapman is director of Thirteen Online.

BIG IDEAS is a production of Thirteen/WNET New York.  It is distributed on public television by APT.  Beth Hoppe is executive producer.  Larkin McPhee is series producer and writer.  Tara Thomas is post-production supervisor.  William Grant is director of science, history and feature programming for Thirteen.

BIG IDEAS has been made possible by the generous support of the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, Strachan and Vivian Donnelley, the Ambrose Monell Foundation, and Rosalind P. Walter.

Thirteen/WNET New York is one of the key program providers for public television, bringing such acclaimed series as Nature, Great Performances, American Masters, Charlie Rose, Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly, Stage on Screen, EGG the arts show, and Cyberchase – as well as the work of Bill Moyers – to audiences nationwide.  As the flagship public broadcaster in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut metro area, Thirteen reaches millions of viewers each week, airing the best of American public television along with its own local productions such as The Ethnic Heritage Specials, The New York Walking Tours, New York Voices, Reel New York, and its MetroArts/Thirteen cable arts programming.  With educational and community outreach projects that extend the impact of its television productions, Thirteen takes television “out of the box.”  And as broadcast and digital media converge, Thirteen is blazing trails in the creation of Web sites, enhanced television, CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs, educational software, and other cutting-edge media products.  More information about Thirteen can be found at:  www.thirteen.org.
