The American Obesity Association (AOA)
announced today the launch of its completely revised website, http://www.obesity.org
. Richard L. Atkinson, M.D., President of the AOA said, ``We believe this
to be the most comprehensive site on overweight and obesity on the Internet.
At a time of greater awareness of obesity, this site provides evidence-based
information for consumers, policymakers, the media and health professionals.
There is nothing else like it.''
``The new site,'' said AOA Executive
Director Morgan Downey, ``contains extensive information about obesity,
prevention programs, treatments, consumer alerts and consumer frauds, and
documentation of discrimination. It contains new information on the recent
Revenue Ruling from the Internal Revenue Service on obesity, when a person
with obesity might be eligible for disability and extensive information
on childhood and adolescent obesity.''
As well as providing the latest obesity
related news, additional sections provide information on how to participate
in advocacy, contact Congress, and share a personal story about how obesity
has affected their lives.
For the media, an easily accessible
pressroom has been added to provide ``Fast Facts'' and useful up-to-date
information on the AOA's activities.
New functional features of the AOA's
website include:
-
More than a hundred links to other sites
related to obesity.
-
An easily manageable navigation system
(search function and menu bars).
-
An E-commerce system for online membership
and contribution to the AOA Research Foundation.
The AOA is a non-profit tax-exempt advocacy
and education association, and the only obesity organization focused on
changing public policy and perceptions about obesity. The mission of the
AOA is to act as an agent of change, move society to re-conceptualize obesity
as a disease and to fashion appropriate strategies to deal with the epidemic.
The AOA is supported by grants from corporations such as Amgen, Abbott
Laboratories, Health Management Resources, Roche Laboratories, Slim-Fast
Foods Co., and Weight Watchers Intl., Inc. as well as by professional and
lay members.
