WNET Launches "Warrior Challenge" Companion Site for TV Series

Warrior Challange dares marines, air force personnel, riot police, and professional athletes to try to endure life as ancient Roman soldiers, gladiators, Vikings, and knights. The online version supplements the "hands-on history" series with additional information and more in-depth looks at the program's themes.  Visitors will be able to get background on the combatants' weapons, uniforms and cultures, and read interviews with some of the program's volunteers and one of its producers.

This spring, Thirteen/WNET New York's WARRIOR CHALLENGE, a four-part series premiering Tuesdays, May 6, 13, 20, and 27 on PBS (check local listings), dares marines, air force personnel, riot police, and professional athletes to try to endure life as ancient Roman soldiers, gladiators, Vikings, and knights.  Now, you too can get armed, armored and dangerous thanks to the series' companion Web site, launching Tuesday, April 29 at http://www.pbs.org/warriorchallenge/

WARRIOR CHALLENGE Online supplements the "hands-on history" series with additional information and more in-depth looks at the program's themes.  Visitors will be able to get
background on the combatants' weapons, uniforms and cultures, and read interviews with some of the program's volunteers and one of its producers.

Those who wish to put their own hands on history can play a Flash game in which they must devise a spear-throwing strategy for Roman soldiers fighting barbarians, make their way, in Flash, through Rome's Coliseum, tour a Viking war ship, learn about the technology that kept it afloat, and test their ability to arm a knight in the field.

"While WARRIOR CHALLENGE Online complements the series, it's designed as an independent project that really provides fresh perspective on the program's content," said Elizabeth Owen, senior producer for Thirteen's Interactive and Broadband department.  "We've tried to present these warriors in the context of their daily lives, and the eras in which they lived.  Our goal is to have users come away feeling that they have not only stepped inside the worlds of the Romans, knights and Vikings, but that they understand the warriors as historical figures."

Beth Hoppe, executive producer of WARRIOR CHALLENGE, added, "The site is a great resource for anyone who wants to learn more after watching.  It adds a wonderful new dimension to the series—one that makes its content, and ultimately the past itself, truly interactive."

WARRIOR CHALLENGE Online is a production of Thirteen Online of Thirteen/WNET New York.  Elizabeth Owen is the senior producer for the station's Interactive and Broadband department.  Anthony Chapman is the director of Thirteen Online.

WARRIOR CHALLENGE is a Shine production for Thirteen/WNET New York in association with Channel 5 (U.K.). Thirteen/WNET New York is one of the key program providers for public television, bringing such acclaimed series as Nature, Great Performances, American Masters, Charlie Rose, Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly, Wide Angle, Stage on Screen, EGG the arts show, and Cyberchase – as well as the work of Bill Moyers – to audiences nationwide.

As the flagship public broadcaster in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut metro area, Thirteen reaches millions of viewers each week, airing the best of American public television along with its own local productions such as The Ethnic Heritage Specials, The New York Walking Tours, New York Voices, Reel New York, and its MetroArts/Thirteen cable arts programming.

With educational and community outreach projects that extend the impact of its television productions, Thirteen takes television "out of the box."  And as broadcast and digital media converge, Thirteen is blazing trails in the creation of Web sites, enhanced television, CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs, educational software, and other cutting-edge media products.  More information about Thirteen can be found at:  www.thirteen.org.
