"Frankly," said Bob Adams, GDC's Executive Director, "Family Message was 'inspired' by the events of September 11th. As we all know, phones and even cell phones can fail us when we need them the most. A busy signal is the last thing any of us want to hear when someone we love may be in danger. E-mail, while very useful on September 11th, has its own problems ranging from the standard viruses to a potential attack on the e-mail system itself. The Web is the most stable system for communication and it should be available to everyone as an alternative. Best of all, you can visit your message center from any computer, anywhere in the world, that has Internet access, a big plus for people who do a lot of traveling." Although there are other services providing "free" websites or e-mail services, Family Message provides four advantages: no spam, no ads, no viruses, just privacy. Subscribers are encouraged to use their centers for any purpose from planning a family gathering to sharing special events in their lives. Even a small business can find good use for Family Message as an inexpensive private "bulletin board" for announcements to employees and feedback to employers, as well as a means of staying in touch in an emergency. Proceeds in excess of expenses will be used by the Center for its global humanitarian work. Adams added, "We don't follow the traditional path of simply asking for donations. That approach has been terribly abused. We prefer to offer something useful to people that also gives them the opportunity to help others in need. As for victims funds, they are also abused and often over-subscribed. Our motto is, 'the best way to avoid victims funds is to avoid having victims'. The fear we feel if we lose touch with the people we care most about during an emergency 'victimizes' us too and can make a terrible disaster even worse." Subscriptions are available at $9 for a two-month trial subscription and $18 for a six-month subscription. An affiliate program is also available to other non-profit agencies and socially-responsible businesses with active websites. "We wanted to keep it as inexpensive as we could, while still sharing with others who help us," stated Dick Carr, GDC's Board Chairman and retired Chief of Chaplains for the US Air Force. About the Global Development Center The Global Development Center (soon
to be formally renamed as the Global Community Center) is registered with
the US Internal Revenue Service as a Section 501 (c)(3) charitable agency.
It operates a "global community center on the Internet" at http://www.globaldevelopment.org.
Founded in 1995, the Center has sponsored projects including, among others,
community development in Guatemala, Kosovo refugee support in Albania,
housing construction for the homeless in the UN-protected region of northern
Iraq, and is currently partnering with Entropia, Inc. in a "distributive
computing" project in the search for a cure for AIDS/HIV.
