Teachers know that children do better
when their parents are involved in their education, said Thomas A.
Pyle, NITVs Executive Director/CEO. We wanted to provide a
way to connect teachers, parents and children to improve learning using
the Internet, he stated. The websites three major content areas
(pre-school
activities, parent
information and K-12
study units) have all been developed and reviewed by working classroom
teachers to solidify the connection between home and school.
The pre-school section is arranged
according to themes, e.g., letters, numbers, colors, shapes, animals, holidays,
seasons, etc. There are activities and crafts, many of which have
math and science dimensions, coloring pages, interactive reinforcement
of learning concepts and printables for downloading.
The parents section contains authoritative
information on how children learn and tips to make that process a positive
experience for their child. The additional benefit of this section
is the ability of the authors to translate clinical material into laymans
terms easily understood by parents. Regarding special education,
for example, there are hundreds of pages of information dealing with disabilities:
the law and responsibilities, evaluations, definitions and characteristics
of various disabilities, educational implications, glossary, etc., all
written for parental understanding. There are topics of interest
for any parent, irregardless of the age of their children.
The study units contain curriculum-based
material covering the most important subject areas (math, science, language
arts, social science, art, music, economics, etc.) and all grade levels
of K-12 instruction. Students and/or parents can easily find resources
to help with class assignments. Teachers have selected the top resources
from the Internet and teachersandfamilies.com have arranged them in an
easy-to-use data base.
The site is free but there are also
additional materials available for a nominal annual subscription.
