David Rumsey and Cartography Associates
announced the launch of Visual Collections (http://www.davidrumsey.com/collections/),
a new digital image collection portal that includes more than 300,000 works
from museums, universities, and private collections throughout the world.
According to the company, the collected works create “an unparalleled online
resource in the arts and humanities that is available for free, public
access.”
Cartography
Associates strives to provide an on-line environment wherein all types
of digital collections from a wide range of resources can be seamlessly
fused together into one large, comprehensive collection. They have
achieved this by allowing users to simultaneously view multiple collections
from any category using the Insight Java Client. While each collection
is rich with its own imagery, character, and information, viewing several
collections simultaneously creates a powerful set of images for all to
study, admire, and enjoy.
Users can search through multiple
collections ranging from antiquity to the present for a particular
artist, time period, or medium. View ancient Chinese scrolls, architectural
slides, modern art installations or historical maps of the Americas all
from your desktop using Luna Imaging’s Insight® software.
Searching for a particular collection
is easy as they have been organized into 5 topics: Cartography; Fine Arts;
Architecture; Photography; and Other; and are also presented as a complete
list in the View All tab.
There are both free and subscription
based collections. By clicking on the Description link below each collection
a separate pop-up window will appear with a full description of the collection
and a link to its main site. All collections are presented in the Luna
Insight software and many offer the collection in both the Insight Browser
and Insight Java Client. Using the viewing tools in the Image Workspace,
both the Insight Browser and Insight Java Client will allow you to perform
a variety of tasks such as zooming, viewing image data, panning and scrolling,
and printing of the image and its data. For a quick glance at the power
of Insight, visit our Insight Flash Tutorial.
View the Help
page for a list of FAQ’s and Insight tutorial links. To learn about
adding your collection, visit the Contact
page. Our site was designed and developed by Ideum.
