Venerable Gray’s Anatomy Released on Web For Free by Bartleby

The 20th edition of Gray’s Anatomy, thoroughly revised and reedited by Warren H. Lewis, was hailed an instant classic when originally published in 1918. Bartleby.com breaths new life into this work by publishing it in a format designed exclusively for the web at http://www.bartleby.com/107/

HeartThe online version is divided into nearly 300 sections, with 1,247 illustrations (many in color and unchanged since the first edition of 1859) rendered in three different resolutions, and with an encyclopedic subject index comprising some 13,000 entries hypertext-linked directly to their respective pages in the text. John Kibler, President and CEO of Bartleby.com said in a press release: “Its 1,247 illustrations in three magnifications, the exhaustive detail of its subject index and its clear but technical writing—combined with a fast and versatile full-text search engine—creates a thoroughly enjoyable and edifying user experience.”

“Anatomy is really one of the few areas in medicine that has not changed significantly since 1918,” said Warren Wulff, M.D., (Orthopedic Surgeon, Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY); “only the way we look at it has changed. Gray’s is truly a classic and Bartleby.com’s publication makes it all the more valuable.”
