Visitors to the site can follow the journey of a pint of blood through the transfusion process. During each stage of the transfusion, the narrative will be punctuated by articles on related scientific, medical, social, political, economic and cultural issues. For example, the development of the most efficient ways to test donors, store and transport blood, etc. An interactive timeline will chart major moments in the history of blood, including the first blood transfusion, conducted by the French doctor Jean-Baptiste Denis in 1667; the discovery of blood types; the Spanish Civil War, when blood was first collected, refrigerated and carried into battle; the story of Charles Drew, the American in charge of the World War II Plasma for Britain campaign who was barred by the U.S. Army from donating his own blood because he was black; and the emergence of AIDS and mad cow disease. The Web site will also include biographies, a glossary, resources, links, a viewer's guide,standards-based lesson plans, series information and more. Discussion boards will allow visitors to voice their opinions and discuss topics such as emerging science, whether blood donors should be compensated, AIDS, security of the blood supply, and more.
