New Site Compares 16,000 Health Care Facilites
.
JCAHO, The nation's largest hospital accrediting body, has  launched a Web site called "QualityCheck", designed to let doctors and the public compare the quality of medical care at thousands of facilities.
http://www.qualitycheck.org .
QualityCheck is a comprehensive guide to the nearly 16,000 Joint Commission-accredited health care organizations and programs throughout the United States. You can access Quality Check at www.qualitycheck.org

QualityCheck is a comprehensive guide to the nearly 16,000 Joint Commission-accredited health care organizations and programs throughout the United States. You can access Quality Check at www.qualitycheck.org.

The following features were added to Quality Check in 2004:

- An improved search function displays the sites of care and the parent organization. Using either the consumer or health care professional track, individuals can search by distance (miles) from zip code, location of care and up to four geographic locations at one time.

- A new function allows individuals to compare up to six Joint Commission-accredited organizations at the same time. The comparisons show the applicable National Patient Safety Goals and National Quality Improvement Goals (hospitals only). Individuals can compare information between parent organizations only, not between sites of care. For example, if Hospital X and Surgical Center Y are both sites accredited under XYZ Medical Center (the parent organization), comparison information will only be available for XYZ Medical Center.

Quality Reports
The Joint Commission began publishing organization-specific Performance Reports in 1994. As part of its new accreditation process, the Joint Commission will provide the public and health care professionals with relevant and useful information about the quality and safety of Joint Commission-accredited organizations in Quality Reports, which will be available on Quality Check on July 15, 2004. Quality Reports will feature a user-friendly format with checks, pluses and minuses to help the general public compare health care organization performance in a number of key areas. Historical Performance Reports will continue to be available after the implementation of Quality Reports.

The model of the Quality Report was carefully scrutinized and extensively tested. Throughout the development of the Quality Reports, the Joint Commission elicited comments from consumer focus groups and stakeholders, including four Joint Commission advisory groups and state hospital associations. An online survey was also posted on the Joint Commission website and feedback was solicited from the health care field; we received more than 200 responses to this survey. The Joint Commission worked to integrate valuable feedback into the model and to refine and clarify the Quality Reports for both the health care field and the public.

The Quality Reports will provide information on a health care organization's:

- Joint Commission accreditation decision and the effective dates of the accreditation award. For Provisional, Conditional, and Preliminary Denial of Accreditation decisions, the reports will list the standards cited for Requirements for Improvement.

- Programs accredited by the Joint Commission, and programs or services accredited by other accrediting bodies.

- Compliance with the Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goals, as applicable to the organization, and performance on National Quality Improvement Goals (hospitals only). National Quality Improvement Goals allow hospitals to report on the key indicators of quality of care in up to four treatment areas: heart attack, heart failure, community acquired pneumonia, and pregnancy and related conditions.  As more measures are approved and endorsed by the National Quality Forum (NQF), the Joint Commission will explore ways to incorporate that data into Quality Reports.

- Special quality awards, including recognition such as Disease-Specific Care Certification, Ernest A. Codman Award, Eisenberg Patient Safety Award, Franklin Award, and Magnet status (awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center), and others approved by the Joint Commission Board of Commissioners.
