space150 Battles for Net Neutrality by Forming WeAreTheWeb.org
Digital marketing agency space150 announces the formation of wearetheweb.org, an online action organization formed to promote Net Neutrality and to defeat a Republic-backed telecommunications bill currently before the US Senate which would allow large telecom companies, such as SBC, Comcast, Verizon and others from providing varying levels of access to sites based upon the amounts they pay.
Currently the Internet is “Neutral” treating all Internet sites equally. In it’s current form the new telecommunications bill would not protect the “neutrality” of the Internet and would allow telecom companies to provide greater access to certain sites over others, the telecom’s could also “throttle” services that consumers and business have come to rely upon such as Skype and Instant Messager unless additional fees are paid.
space150 through its R&D group, spacelab, have developed a strategy for using the power of the internet to defeat what it sees as a major threat to the overall complexion of the Internet: WeAreTheWeb.org. The online action initiative utilizes the web to promote the issues pertaining to “Net Neutrality” and the real world ramifications that the current changes being considered would have on consumers and on businesses. WeAreTheWeb.org has created humorous viral content that will promote the idea of “Net Neutrality” through embeddable music videos and interviews with Internet celebrities.
WeAreTheWeb.org has recruited help from Internet Celebrities such as “The Tron Guy”, “Leslie Hall” and “Peter Pan”, each have become famous and built followings using the Internet. “We connected with people and built followings through the Internet because it was unregulated and we could reach people directly even through we did not have corporate backing, the changes to the Internet currently being discussed would hurt that which in a way would undermine the soul of the Internet” said Internet celebrity and WeAreTheWeb.com supporter, Leslie Hall.
The subject of Net Neutrality has recently moved to the forefront as The Daily Show with Jon Stewart has gone on a crusade to expose the danger of a tiered Internet and the lack of understanding the lawmakers proposing the new legislation actually had on the subject. Senator Ted Stevens (R – AK), of the Senate Commerce Committee, has emerged as the spokesperson for the Net Neutrality bill currently before the US Senate. Senator Stevens is well known to be the “mouthpiece” of the telecom industry and has failed to make a cogent argument to support the bill. Stevens recently stated that the Internet was made up of “tubes” and that an email that he sent took five days to be delivered. “I don’t know if the average consumer and Internet user understands the ramifications of what this legislation will do” says space150 CEO and Net Neutrality Activist William Jurewicz, “The reason why the Internet works and has been so effective and so rapidly adopted is that it is democratic, this bill would fundamentally change that. We will not rest until everyone understands this and that this bill is an obvious corporate highjacking of the Senate which will ultimately hurt the consumer. This is why we had to launch: WeAreTheWeb.org”.
WeAreTheWeb.org’s first video is online at www.WeAreTheWeb.org and will be featured throughout the web and made freely available for users to share.
