Struggling
to Learn, a new PBS Parents Web site by WGBH,
the producers of the television documentary and Web site Misunderstood
Minds, puts learning disabilities into perspective and helps parents
and teachers navigate this often complicated and confusing landscape by
profiling a variety of learning problems, treatments, and expert opinions.
The site is designed to give parents
and teachers a better understanding of learning processes and potential
reading, writing, math and attention difficulties, and specific strategies
and resources for responding, as well as the opportunity to hear from a
range of learning disability experts.
Millions of American school children
struggle with serious learning problems. Each day they face tasks that,
for reasons unknown to them, never become automatic and always seem to
stand in the way of their progress as students. For parents and teachers
of a struggling child, the picture is not much clearer or any less frustrating.
Heres what youll find online:
Understanding and Recognizing
An overview of learning processes,
potential difficulties and how to recognize them, and general information
on the importance of responding
Asking the Experts
Parents' frequently asked questions
posed to our panel of learning disability experts
Supporting Your Child
Strategies and tips for helping
a struggling child, at home and in school
Finding Resources
Books, articles, Web sites, multimedia,
and video resources for further learning
This site is also accessible, designed
for use with screen reader devices that render text into speech for blind
and low-vision Web users.
