CDC Site Offers West
Nile Virus Information, Webcast

satellite broadcast will provide up-to-date information on the epidemiology
of and prevention strategies for the control of West Nile virus. This program,
targeted to clinicians, laboratorians, and public health officials, will
present current information on clinical and laboratory diagnosis of West
Nile virus. The program will include a question and answer session via
toll-free telephone lines.

West Nile (WN) virus has emerged in
recent years in temperate regions of Europe and North America, presenting
a threat to public, equine, and animal health. The most serious manifestation
of WN virus infection is fatal encephalitis (inflammation of the brain)
in humans and horses, as well as mortality in certain domestic and wild
birds.
As of August 7, 2002, state health
departments have released information on 112 cases of West Nile virus related
human illness this year, including 5 deaths. From 1999 through 2001, there
were 149 cases of West Nile virus human illness in the United States reported
to CDC and confirmed, including 18 deaths.
This program will be available as
a live webcast today, August 8, 2002 ~ 3:00-4:00 PM EDT, and will also
be available for viewing after 7:00 PM EDT August 8, 2002, on the program
website. The
CDC site features the following content Background, Questions and Answers,
Entomology (Insects), Vertebrate Ecology, (Birds and Mammals), Virology
(Virus Studies), Surveillance and Control, Publications, Guidelines
for Surveillance, Prevention, and Control.
