ARTHUR
For eight years, ARTHUR
has been a favorite for kids of all ages. Underneath each entertaining
TV episode is a message that promotes literacy, problem solving, creative
thinking, and more. The Parents & Teachers area of the award-winning
ARTHUR Web site is home to much of the series educational materials including
resources, lesson plans, and activities. Topics include reading, writing,
communication, global and cultural awareness, sibling rivalry, friendships,
and health. Also included are issues relevant to the newest generation
of families, such as exploring the Internet together and dealing with frightening
events children may experience in their communities or see on television.
"Making Music With Arthur," a 16-page guide for preschool teachers and
caregivers of children ages three to five, uses the ARTHUR series to promote
a greater understanding of the positive impact music can have on children’s
development. The guide will be added to the ARTHUR Web site in December.

ZOOMout the Vote! For Election Day
2004
ZOOM is showing kids they can make
a difference in the 2004 elections with ZOOMout
the Vote, a nationwide “by kids, for the people” election campaign.

through a special election section of the ZOOM Web site. Kids can
voice their opinions on important issues through interactive polls, cast

kids can take to encourage their parents to register and to vote, and how
to get involved in civic action themselves. Targeted to six- to twelve-year-olds,
ZOOMout the Vote is designed to give kids the tools they need to get involved
in and excited about the democratic process.

WAYBACK: U.S. HISTORY FOR KIDS!
WayBack:
U.S. History for Kids is American Experience's online site for kids
8-12 years old. WayBack tackles topics ranging from civil rights to travel
to genealogy to the future. Kids can experience history through games,
virtual trips, do-it-yourself projects, engaging photos, and interviews.
Coming in September: two new
Wayback sites, "It's Not Fair!" which explores the topic of fairness in
society, and "Presidents: The Secret History." Timed to coincide
with the upcoming presidential election, the "Presidents" site exposes
the surprising and often humorous secrets of American presidents, takes
a close-up look at historic campaign memorabilia, and asks kids to offer
advice for the president. http://pbskids.org/wayback/index.html
AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: RFK
A servant to his brother for most
of his life, Robert Kennedy emerged as his own man and a leader in his
own right after John was killed, and eventually came to be a strong candidate
for president. His death left the nation asking what a Robert Kennedy
presidency would have meant for the causes he championed-- civil rights
and fair labor practices. How would the nation's involvement in Vietnam
have changed? And what would the face of US politics look like today?
AMERICAN EXPERIENCE explores these questions, and the life and legacy of
Robert Kennedy in “RFK,” a new film and Web
site.
Visit the Web site to take an interactive
trip through the "Shock Year" of 1968. Hear from historians and friends
of RFK on what may have happened if RFK had lived in "What If." And learn
more about his career of battles in "RFK's Enemies." This and more is available
online. Monday, October 4, 2004 at 9pm on PBS (check local listings)

THEY MADE AMERICA
You may not know their names, you
may not know their stories - but they made America. Based on the forthcoming
book by Sir Harold Evans, “They
Made America” is a new four-part series from the producers of AMERICAN
EXPERIENCE, featuring innovators such as Ruth Handler, the mastermind behind
the Barbie doll, and Russell Simmons, the marketing genius who brought
hip-hop culture to the popular mainstream. Their ideas and entrepreneurial
spirit gave birth to landmark advances that propelled America's evolution
over two centuries.
The “They Made America” Web site
includes an innovators tournament where players rank and compare innovators
in an NCAA-style bracket competition. Visitors will also learn more about
the innovators featured in the series, discuss their merits in an online
forum, and view detailed profiles of dozens of other innovators whose contributions
were instrumental to the development of the country. Monday, November 8
at 9pm on PBS (check local listings)

ORIGINS
Has the universe always existed?
How did it become a place that could harbor life? Are we alone, or are
there alien worlds waiting to be discovered? NOVA presents some startling
new answers in its four-part series, "Origins.”
New clues from the frontiers of science are presented by dynamic astrophysicist
Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American
Museum of Natural History. As the host of "Origins," Tyson leads viewers
on a cosmic journey to the beginning of time and to the depths of space,
in search of the first stirrings of life and its traces on other worlds.
In four accompanying lessons
middle and high school students explore micrometeorites, the characteristics
of life, the search for life on other planets, and facts about Earth's
elements. Each lesson has a program summary, before and after watching
ideas, an activity setup, science standard connections, student handouts,
activity answers, and a resources list.
The NOVA Web site also features related
interactive activities including a "History of the Universe" timeline revealing
the evolution of the universe from the Big Bang to the time 10,100 years
from now when burned-out stars and black holes will have evaporated; an
"Origins on Earth" mapping game, which asks students to pinpoint where
origins researchers are finding clues to how the universe, Earth, and life
itself began; and a game featuring "The Drake Equation," giving readers
a chance to calculate how many intelligent, communicating civilizations
exist in our galaxy by using the famous equation developed in the 1960s
by radio astronomer Frank Drake. Tuesday, September 28 and Wednesday, September
29 at 8pm on PBS (check local listings)

THIS OLD HOUSE
To celebrate its 25th anniversary
and maintain the tradition of quality craftsmanship, This Old House will
reach out to future craftsmen in several ways: For the first time
in its history, student apprentices will work alongside the This Old House
crew on the 25th anniversary broadcast centerpiece, the This Old House
Carlisle project, in Massachusetts. In addition, a portion of the
proceeds from the sale of the Carlisle house will go towards a building
arts scholarship, created to address the shortage of talented tradesmen
and to stimulate a renewed interest in the building arts among young people.
Details of the scholarship will be announced this fall.
This Old House is also traveling
across the country to meet fans for the first-ever national hands-on tour,
"Meet This Old House", presented by The Home Depot. For each of these six
day-long events at a Home Depot location, we will invite students from
local vocational schools and community colleges to join us in the metropolitan
areas of Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, New York, Boston, and Atlanta,
celebrating the past while looking towards the future of the trades. The
Web
site includes 25th anniversary details, highlights from This Old House
Magazine, a database of home improvement questions answered by the Ask
This Old House crew, homeowner know-how, a home renovator's discussion
forum, informative videos, materials calculators, information about past
This Old House projects, a live web cam footage of the This Old House Carlisle
Project, and much more.
