SpamCon Foundation Opens, Launches Site
Two months after announcing its creation, SpamCon Foundation (http://www.spamcon.org) has opened its doors. The organization protects email as a medium of communications and commerce by reducing the amount of unsolicited email, or "spam", on the Internet. Spam forces unwanted and objectionable materials into Internet users' mailboxes, impairs our ability to communicate freely, and costs billions of dollars annually.

"Spam has grown partly because users, network administrators and responsible marketers have fought it in different ways, even when their ultimate goals are the same," said SpamCon Foundation Executive Director Tom Geller
The organization's officers are Tom Geller, President and Executive Director. A former high-tech journalist and public relations executive, Mr. Geller has been using email since 1986 and tracking spam issues since 1997; Ted Gavin, Treasurer. Primary author of an official paper on email marketing for the Internet Engineering Task Force, Mr. Gavin is an elected member of the Internet Societal Steering Group. He is a Senior Associate with turnaround firm Nachman Hays Brownstein, Inc.; Tracy Kronzak, Secretary. An expert in non-profit operations, Ms. Kronzak holds a Master's Degree in Public Administration from New York University.

"Spam has grown partly because users, network administrators and responsible marketers have fought it in different ways, even when their ultimate goals are the same," said SpamCon Foundation Executive Director Tom Geller. "We're pleased to provide resources and communication venues for all these groups, for the ultimate betterment of the Internet.''

Since June, the Foundation has:

  • Produced a searchable database of over 7,000 media stories about spam over the past four years, in cooperation with Spam News (http://www.spamnews.com).
  • Incorporated and improved the award-winning legal resource formerly known as The Suespammers Project.
  • Developed collaborative relationships with Internet administrators and marketers to begin addressing email abuse.
  • Created and fostered email discussion groups about spam and email marketing issues.
  • Collected a library of statistics, studies, articles and white papers to help companies and governmental bodies develop policies on email use.

  • Gained a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor in Media Alliance (http://www.media-alliance.org).
The nonprofit SpamCon Foundation protects email as a viable communication and commerce medium by supporting measures to reduce the amount of unsolicited email that crosses private networks, while ensuring that valid email reaches its destination. For more information, visit http://www.spamcon.org or contact Executive Director Tom Geller, 415/552-2557, release-20010801@spamcon.org (bulk and vendor messages prohibited).
