BigHits.com,
Inc. this week announced the web’s first Amber Alert enabling technology.
“In response to the growing public awareness of the AMBER Alert system
and it’s tremendous value as a tool for recovering abducted children, we
are now deploying the Code Amber Alert
Ticker,” says BigHits President and Founder Bryant Harper. “By
adding a single line of code to their web pages, web site owners may now
display active Amber Alerts to their site visitors.”
The AMBER Plan is a voluntary partnership between law-enforcement agencies and broadcasters to activate an urgent bulletin in the most serious child-abduction cases. AMBER stands for America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response. “We have effectively
extended the reach of Amber Alerts to tens of millions of Web Surfers.
The Code Amber ticker addresses the apparent dichotomy of global vs. local
deployment and the urgent need to get local exposure. This is accomplished
by providing the ability to click a link in the alert ticker and email
the complete alert to others in the immediate area of the alert. For example,
if someone in New York were to see an alert for Florida, they would be
able to email the information to friends in Florida by clicking the link
in the ticker”
During an early release to 30,000 BigHits members over the August 24th weekend, the ticker was adopted by a large enough cadre of web site owners to deliver over 66,000 ticker views on the following Monday. Code Amber’s goal is to have 2,000,000 sites displaying the Amber Alert ticker by the end of 2002. “The response has been overwhelmingly positive. After only three days we are already speaking to people in the UK, Australia and Canada about establishing Code Amber sites with tickers specific to those countries which we will do as quickly as we are able,” said Harper. The Code Amber
project is provided by BigHits.com,
Inc. as a free public service.
