Surgeon In Blog Marathon To Help Children Live
On September 9th, Indian heart surgeon Dr.Mani Sivasubramanian will stay awake for a 24-hour, day-and-night blogging marathon to raise awareness about congenital heart defects and generate funds to sponsor life-saving treatment for poor children. This pediatric surgeon's unconventional hobby of Internet marketing has steadily grown into a major source of funding for the Dr.Mani Children Heart Foundation, a non-profit organization he founded in 2003. Of an estimated 1 million children with heart birth defects in India alone, fewer than 3% will receive an operation necessary to save their lives - unless they get help. Even though the cost of cardiac surgery in India (approximately $2,200) is much lower than other developed countries, it is still astronomical to families with a monthly income of $300 or less. Like previous events, all proceeds from the fourth annual Heart Kids Blogathon 2006 will be donated to the Foundation. In a judicious mix of business and charity, the Foundation has raised over $40,000 in 3 years and already funded 13 operations with more to follow. 95% of the total funds donated are used directly for the Foundation's purpose of extending heart healthcare to children from poor families. Dr.Mani ensures this by adopting the same bootstrapping approach he uses in business to his charity. No hefty compensation packets, no free 'round the world' junkets, no perks for this C.E.O. The Foundation also has a zero dollar 'marketing budget'. A loyal, rapidly growing group of volunteers, donors and supporters, guided by the doctor-marketer, handle almost every aspect of spreading the word about this global effort. FAST COMPANY magazine recently featured Dr.Mani's charity activities in a short write up published in the September 2006 issue. On Saturday, September 9th, the 'surgeon with a heart' from Chennai will stretch his limits, staying awake for 24 hours while updating his weblog every 30 minutes.
