Memorial Service Launched At RememberWell.net
RememberWell.net includes a "self-reflection" page that encourages the living to set up their own commemoration. RememberWell.net is a user-friendly, multi-denominational on-line memorial service that launched in July. With its comprehensive 8-page outline for creating a tribute to the departed, RememberWell.net allows the bereaved to elegantly commemorate a late loved one. The website's simple, functional, yet serene design -- mixing nature imagery and a range of religious symbols -- allows the living to alert family and friends of a death, offer details about funerals and celebrations, and store and share memories of the departed. To facilitate a memorial, RememberWell.net provides a personal web address to a unique domain housing a RememberWell Commemoration that can be shared publicly or kept private. This location will store a profile of the individual to be memorialized, including:
Secure credit card processing makes registration easy, facilitating the immediate construction of any memorial by the customer; the designated Commemoration Administrator. A personal domain name is created for each memorial. When the site address is e-mailed to interested parties, they are able to participate in the commemoration via the guest book. And to assure security, all entries -- text, photos, video or audio -- are first cleared through the Commemoration Administrator. In a bold and unusual tactic, RememberWell.net includes a "self-reflection" page that encourages the living to set up their own commemoration. Anyone may sign up for an account, fill out a questionnaire, and add information and items to their personal memorial profile, leaving space for family and friends to use in the future. Thus, RememberWell.net addresses notions of what is important to us as individuals and what is important about us to others. RememberWell.net was developed by Heather Swain, a painter, photographer, and recent UC-Berkeley graduate. Inspired by a course entitled "Death, Dying and Modern Medicine," she decided to pursue an idea that had been gestating in her mind for years. She attended a number of funerals and memorials. In their wake, she began to muse on the textured history of her friends and family, and explore the concepts of memory and what makes a life meaningful. Swain contacted Chris Sands, a Pasadena, CA.-based designer and ex-yoga instructor, to help her realize her idea for a religiously tolerant on-line memorial site. In collaboration with programmer Ryan Kaldari of Moses.com, they have come up with RememberWell.net -- a flexible, fresh and innovative way to pay lasting homage to those who have passed on. In keeping with our concern for end-of-life issues, RememberWell.net donates 10% of its after-tax profits to palliative care and hospice organizations.
