The club kicks off with The Cyberchase Club Online Contest, one of the first on pbskids.org. Between September 15 and 28, participants in this virtual scavenger hunt can scour the site for the clues to help them win exciting Cyberchase prizes: the new Scholastic, Inc. book The Search for the Power Orb by Adam Rudman; a newly-released CD-ROM adventure from Riverdeep Interactive Learning Limited & Brighter Child Interactive, LLC (either Carnival Chaos or Castleblanca Quest); and a colorful character poster. At Cyberchase Online kids have a blast while learning math. The Web site takes visitors on virtual adventures where, like the heroes of the Cyberchase television series, they can use problem-solving strategies to defeat the bad guys. Since the site launched in January 2002, visitors have logged over 300 million page views, to play scores of fun math-based games tied to the popular PBS KIDS cartoon. In October, the site will relaunch its Parents and Teachers sections with exciting new lessons and activities to use at home or in the classroom. Cyberchase, produced by Thirteen/WNET New York and Nelvana Limited, takes learning beyond the TV screen and brings it to kids directly through their computers, libraries, schools, and at special events around the country. Studies show Cyberchase viewers develop positive attitudes about math, and improve their comprehension and confidence with problem-solving. Executive producers are Sandra Sheppard, director of children's and educational programming at Thirteen, and Kristin Laskas Martin, former executive producer of the award-winning Magic School Bus. Larry Jacobs, former director of Magic School Bus, is animation director for Nelvana Limited. Cyberchase Online is a production of Thirteen Online of Thirteen/WNET New York. It is produced by David Hirmes. Anthony Chapman is executive producer of Cyberchase Online and director of Thirteen Online. Major funding for Cyberchase is provided by the National Science Foundation, PBS, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Additional funding is provided by The Kettering Family Foundation and the Volckhausen Family. Thirteen/WNET New York is one of the key program providers for public television, bringing such acclaimed series as Nature, Great Performances, American Masters, Charlie Rose, Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly, Wide Angle, Stage on Screen, EGG the arts show, and Cyberchase – as well as the work of Bill Moyers – to audiences nationwide. As the flagship public broadcaster in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut metro area, Thirteen reaches millions of viewers each week, airing the best of American public television along with its own local productions such as The Ethnic Heritage Specials, The New York Walking Tours, New York Voices, Reel New York, and its MetroArts/Thirteen cable arts programming. With educational and community outreach projects that extend the impact of its television productions, Thirteen takes television “out of the box.” And as broadcast and digital media converge, Thirteen is blazing trails in the creation of Web sites, enhanced television, CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs, educational software, and other cutting-edge media products. More information about Thirteen can be found at: www.thirteen.org. PBS KIDS provides a nonviolent, noncommercial daily television schedule that empowers children as members of their communities, nation and world. PBS KIDS welcomes parents, teachers and caregivers as learning partners through broadcast as well as online through pbskids.org. PBS, headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, is a private, nonprofit media enterprise, owned and operated by the nation's 350 public television stations. Serving nearly 100 million people each week, PBS enriches the lives of all Americans through quality programs and education services on noncommercial television, the Internet and other media.
