In a children’s television first, the series blends animation with live-action documentary footage in stories aimed to help children develop an awareness of and appreciation for diversity of cultures. In each animated story, Buster creates “video postcards” of his adventures to send home to his mother and friends. When he turns his video camera on to record the real people and places he visits, viewers see live, P.O.V.-style footage just as Buster sees it. The new series premieres Monday, October 11, 2004 (check local listings) on PBS KIDS GO!, a new educational multimedia destination created by, for, and about early elementary school kids that airs weekdays and weekends Buster stays in touch with his friends online at http://pbskidsgo.org/buster where he maintains an online travel diary, or “blog.” For each of the 40 destinations, Buster – in his unmistakable style – writes about his experiences in short, kid-friendly entries. Each blog also contains links to online songs, video clips, or recipes that he’s gathered during his travels. Plus each blog offers kids the chance to express themselves, and get a glimpse into others’ lives, through Buster’s “Roadside Poll,” an online voter. Buster also offers a variety of games. In the U.S. geography game, “Where’s Buster?” kids follow clues to find out which state Buster is visiting. “Connect the States,” Buster’s adaptation of his very popular “Connect the World” game from the ARTHUR Web site, is an interactive card-matching game using state flags, shapes, foods, and animals. And to stave off the “are we there yet?” syndrome, there’s Buster’s “Travel Bingo,” played just like regular Bingo, but with words kids will see while traveling or even just walking around their neighborhood. A Parents & Teachers area includes program information, recommended books, the series’ educational philosophy, and, coming in late October, a comprehensive teachers’ guide for after-school programs and teachers working with English language learners in grades two through four. The guide will include professionally developed lesson plans for each of the season’s 40 episodes. "Postcards from Buster" is produced by WGBH Boston and Cookie Jar Entertainment Inc. in association with Marc Brown Studios. Executive producers are Carol Greenwald, Marc Brown, Pierre Valette, and Toper Taylor. Natatcha Estébanez is series producer. Producers are Lesley Taylor and Tolon Brown. Funding for "Postcards from Buster" is provided by a Ready To Learn Television Cooperative Agreement from the U.S. Department of Education through the Public Broadcasting Service and by public television viewers.
