New York launches JIM CROW ONLINE, the official companion Web site to the
PBS documentary, THE RISE AND FALL OF JIM CROW.
The
Web site, exploring segregation from the end of the Civil War to the onset
of the Civil Rights Movement, is live at http://www.pbs.org/jimcrow/

Through
fascinating interactive features, this site enables visitors to learn more
about the history of Jim Crow in the United States and the real-life crusaders
of the period who fought against its brutality.
Features include:

A National Struggle,
which explores the role of the Jim Crow states and the federal government.
Journalists, lawyers and NAACP representatives discuss how the courts,
the President and Congress helped preserve Jim Crow through their inaction
and ultimately facilitated the downfall of Jim Crow.

A timeline that
documents A Century of Segregation through historical texts, video, audio
and original essays.

Interactive Maps
that plot events and trends such as race riots, migration patterns, land
ownership, lynchings, and Jim Crow laws nationally, on a state-by-state
basis and locally, with pop-up windows the highlight the topics in greater
detail.

Jim Crow Stories,
which provide first-hand accounts of the people, places, organizations,
and events that challenged the Jim Crow system.

A downloadable
Intergenerational Discussion Guide that is designed to encourage communication
between generations on the topic of Jim Crow. In addition, the Education
section also provides standards-based lesson plans that utilize online
and video resources to encourage students to explore complex issues.
