Safety Training Resources for Increasingly Diverse Workforce
URL: http://safety.1800inet.com The U.S. workforce is becoming increasingly diverse. According to the BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics), 15% of the current working population was born outside the U.S. The number is growing, projected to increase to 25% by the year 2012. Significantly, the overwhelming majority of this segment of the population is of Hispanic origin. With this increasing diversity, companies are beginning to face the challenge of training workers who do not speak English. Nowhere is this more critical than in the area of safety. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), the U.S. Department of Labor's agency responsible for overseeing and enforcing workplace safety, reports that 25% of the fatalities they investigate are in some way related to language or cultural barriers Immigrant workers are at greater risk by taking dangerous, labor-intensive, low-paying jobs with little or no safety training. This is also borne out by the latest figures from The National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, which shows that while overall work related fatalities decreased in 2005, fatal injuries among Hispanic workers increased by 2%, 917 up from 902 in 2004. The majority of the fatalities occurred amongst immigrant Hispanic workers, 625 up from 596 in 2004. However, OSHA is committed "... to protecting the health and safety of our nation's diverse Hispanic workforce." Furthermore, according to OSHA, "... Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees." Companies are, therefore, required to provide adequate training for their workers to protect them from workplace hazards or face OSHA citations and fines. Companies also risk negative publicity, lawsuits and increasing insurance costs. For employers the obstacles to providing safety training for their Hispanic workers can be challenging. Many workers do not understand English well enough to be trained in English, and most safety managers do not speak Spanish well enough to train workers in Spanish. To help meet this challenge, the Workplace Safety Store offers a comprehensive selection of English and Spanish safety training resources on key OSHA training topics. To further help customers make informed choices, video previews and detailed outlines highlighting what is contained in the courses are also available on-line. About The Workplace Safety
