Companion Site for NOVA's "Magnetic Storm" Launches

Magnetic Storm” airs on NOVA Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at 8PM ET on PBS.  Visit the Companion NOVA Web Site at http://www.pbs.org/nova/magnetic/

Space weather forecasters announced today that a G5 geomagnetic storm, the highest rated space weather event on their scale, was hitting Earth today. The last time a storm of such intensity hit the planet, on March 13th, 1989, the lights went out all across Canada and the eastern seaboard of the United States as far south as New York.

The most serious power grid failure in American history was caused by a magnetic storm in the Earth's upper atmosphere, itself triggered by the eruption of a huge flare from the surface of the Sun. Unusual as this event may seem, many scientists today are beginning to worry that it may be a harbinger of things to come, and that changes to the planet's magnetic field could make us ever more vulnerable to deadly radiation from space.

NOVA's upcoming program “Magnetic Storm,” airing on PBS November 18 at 8PM ET (check local listings), explores this little-known topic. On the program's companion Web site, available now, find related articles and interactive activities that explain the importance and gravity of these events.

Visit http://www.pbs.org/nova/magnetic/ to:

See a Reversal
Watch a simulated flip of the Earth's magnetic field, from the first signs of instability to the final reversal.

Gallery of Auroras
Auroras like those displayed here would be visible every night of the year during a magnetic field reversal.

Impact on Animals
Would a dramatic change in the Earth's magnetic field affect creatures that rely on it during migration?

When Compasses Point South
As this time line shows, our planet's magnetic shield has reversed its direction hundreds of times.

In addition, other resources are available at the site to help teachers use this topic in the classroom, including a teachers guide, links and books on Earth’s magnetic field.   For further information on the NOVA program visit http://www.pbs.org/pressroom/ for a program press release and photography.
