Lexicon of English Idioms, Words, and Catch-Phrases Launched

Is it an insult to be called a stickybeak? If you're riggwelted, is that good or bad? A new web site at WhatDoesThatMean.com offers a fun, free lexicon of English idioms, words and catch phrases from around the world, and will help you find out.

"My husband I come from two different English speaking countries. "We are fascinated by the fact that even though we technically speak the same language, we quite often have to ask each other for translations. We started the site to put together a living dictionary of all the national and regional variations there are of English."

Whatdoesthatmean.com is designed to help English speakers translate each other. Built on the MediaWiki platform (the same platform used for Wikipedia and Wiktionary), the site allows anyone equipped with an Internet connection and a web browser to search for, add and/or edit entries. The site will also be useful to those who speak English as a second or foreign language. Idioms cannot be taken literally; whatdoesthatmean.com provides explanations as to meaning, usage, and history. It also notes when terms are inappropriate or offensive, in order to prevent cultural misunderstandings.

Said site co-founder Chandra Clarke, "My husband I come from two different English speaking countries. "We are fascinated by the fact that even though we technically speak the same language, we quite often have to ask each other for translations. We started the site to put together a living dictionary of all the national and regional variations there are of English."

Language buffs will enjoy browsing the site to add to their vocabulary, and adding entries to preserve and explain their local culture. Marketing executives may find the site useful for checking the meanings of popular phrases to avoid embarrassing double meanings. Academics will also find the 'living dictionary' aspect of the site interesting as the database grows and new terms are added or changed over time. The URLwire Effect:
"URLwire is without question the most effective way to tell the right people in the online world about your web site"
-- CoolShopping.com

My experience with URLWire has been entirely positive.
I received coverage (and links!) from key sites and in e-newsletters, one of which had over 500,000 readers. Resulting traffic has been more than impressive. URLwire
demonstrated to me that it's the prime choice for announcing a web site. Edwin Hayward
IncomingLinks.com

"Eric, URLwire got our site covered and linked online in places we'd tried for months to get in without success. And, URLwire did it in one day.
