The Million Minute Family Challenge is a grassroots effort encouraging interaction and communication among family and friends through playing board games. The goal is to encourage at least 1,000 families, friends or organizations in each of the 50 states to play a board game together for 20 minutes. That’s 1,000,000 minutes of quality time with family and friends! The MillionMinute.com web site is filled with fun ideas on how to participate, games to play and educational information including the benefits of family time and the history of games. Schools and organizations can download an event organizer kit and free lesson plans. Everyone can participate in the Million Minute Family Challenge by playing games and logging game-play minutes at MillionMinute.com before December 31, 2003. Board games allow parents to instruct and interact with their children. Games help the youngest players develop social skills and are early lessons in understanding and following rules. They can also introduce concepts such as counting and matching. As children grow, board games can help sharpen vocabulary, spelling, creative writing and critical thinking skills, all under the guise of having fun. “When selecting games, parents should look for those that are challenging, but allow for success, and also leave room for a variety of play,” says Richard E. Bavaria, Ph.D. and vice president of education for Sylvan Learning Center. “Good games nurture a child’s ideas and imagination, while growing with a child’s changing interests.” The following family-friendly companies are supporting the 2003 Million Minute Family Challenge by generating awareness and resources for the event: Patch Products, Sylvan Learning Center, Homeschooling Parent, KOA Kampgrounds and Hilton Vacation Station.
