Over 3,500 hours
of historic newsreel footage can be viewed free of charge on the web at
http://www.britishpathe.com.
British
Pathe, one of the oldest media companies in the world, has placed its
archive online. The bi-weekly news bulletins, which played in cinemas
from 1910 to 1970, are now available via the Pathé web site as a
direct result of a £1 million grant from the National Lottery.
The site offers a free preview for the general public. Professionals wanting
footage for re-broadcasting need to request a licence.
Specialists at Pathé
spent over 50,000 hours transferring their 35mm film archive to digital
video. The film had been stored in a special warehouse that required 30,000
square feet. By comparison, the digital version takes up five square feet
on a single Pathé computer drive. The files have been streamlined
to be downloaded quickly over an a 56K connection, though the quality remains
good enough to view at a reasonable size on your monitor/screen.
