The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) has monitored the Sun since 1995. The purpose of SOHO is to provide early warnings of space weather that might damage satellites and/or power grids here on Earth. The SOHO scientists ran an online vote asking the general public to select the best photographs, and the winners of that vote are live on the site now.
