Famed Pebble Beach Introduces New Expanded Site
.
Online store, historical details and hole-by-hole course tours included in wide-ranging venue

Long considered a world-wide presence in the golf and resort industry, Pebble Beach has now become a world-wide-web presence as well. With the redesign and significant expansion of its Website at http://www.pebblebeach.com, the famed golf venue has created an online extension of the real-life stage on which golf’s richest moments have been played out.

“Our goal was to extend the Pebble Beach ‘experience’ beyond the geographic boundaries of the Monterey Peninsula,” explains Steve Wille, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Pebble Beach Company. “We wanted to create a site that not only provided essential Resort information, but also captured the extraordinary nature of Pebble Beach itself.”

Therefore, the site—which launched this past Friday June 11—feels more like an escorted tour through the history and environment of Pebble Beach than like the traditional marketing brochures posted on most corporate websites. “We wanted to recreate the feeling of an actual visit,” explains Wille. “Magical and powerful, yet approachable and entertaining.”

To that end, the site includes:

- A hole-by-hole tour of Pebble Beach Golf Links, hosted by PGA Hall-of-Famer Johnny Miller, who has himself won two Tour events at Pebble Beach. The tour features optional RealAudio and RealVideo feeds, as well as a look at the signature holes of Spyglass Hill Golf Course, The Links at Spanish Bay and Del Monte Golf Course. The tour was created by Virtual Visits of San Mateo, California.

- Inside information about all major championships played at Pebble Beach, including:
—the annual AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am
 —the 1999 U.S. Amateur Championship
 —the 2000 U.S. Open Championship

- A “Legend and Lore” section that brings to life Pebble Beach’s reputation for creating some of golf’s greatest championships and most historic moments

- An online pro shop, provided by Universal Internet of Carmel, California, to give visitors to the site a chance to view and purchase items from the famous Pebble Beach Golf Shop.

- A calendar of events and detailed descriptions of local destinations to help those who are planning to visit the Resorts in person

- A stunning collection of photographs throughout, to capture the almost-indescribable beauty of the area

The site was designed by the San Francisco office of USWEB/CKS. The award-winning firm was responsible for the classic look of the new website—a look chosen to reflect the sense of classicism that defines the golf courses and surrounding areas of Pebble Beach itself. Weinstein Advertising, a Washington, D.C.-based agency, created the copy.

“When you visit Pebble Beach, you are immediately engulfed in the beauty and the history of the area,” says Wille. “We hope that when people visit us online, they will have some of that same experience.”
